Pole Class Leveling

One of the most common questions we hear at Studio K is "How do I level up?" Whether you’re just getting started or feel ready to take things to the next stage, we’re here to guide you through your pole journey with safety, structure, and support.

What are the level pre-reqs?

First things first. Here is what we require for each core pole class.

  • Pole L1: Comfortable with Intro to Pole moves (walk, dip, knee spin, sit, front hook spin)

  • Pole L1.5: Consistently able to climb to the top of the pole.

  • Pole L2: Can invert from the floor without kicking, inside and outside leg hang.

  • Pole L3: Comfortable and controlled inside and outside leg hang, extended butterfly, shoulder mount, side climb, and aerial invert.

And while you’re here, this is what we require for our other classes.

  • Open Pole: Comfort designing your own practice time, including ability to warm up safely. Recommended minimum of 5 pole classes before attending open pole.

  • Spin Pole L1.5+: Pre-req: climb + hold body in forearm press, jasmine.

  • Low Flow: Comfortable in half-bracket grip spins and pole pirouettes.

  • Low Flow 2: Diamond pirouette, candlestick shoulderstand, lunge to kickstand.

  • Naughty Night: Comfortable in half-bracket grip spins and pole pirouettes.

Is there a test to level up?

There is no official test. Check in with your instructors to get an idea of where they think you’re at and what you can work on if leveling up is a goal.

I can do the pre-reqs sometimes, can I level up?

In the next level you build on the previous level’s foundations. Many of the pre-reqs are entry points into the skills you’ll learn next. You should be able to perform them consistently almost every time you try.

What classes should I be taking?

To level up successfully (and safely!) consistency is key. The #1 way to do this is in your current level pole class to build technique and control. You can enhance your pole training with Pole Conditioning and Flexibility.

Feel you’re getting close to nailing a pre-requisite? Our clinics are offered a couple times a year. These are designed for students who have already built a foundation through core classes. Clinics offer focused time to dive deeper into specific areas, but they aren’t meant to replace weekly classes.

On that note, classes like Low Flow, Spin, Heels, and Freestyle are fun additions, but they are not meant to replace core classes. If you’re unsure what classes to take, ask us!

Why progression should be slow (and that’s a good thing)!

We get it, you're excited to fly! But real talk, rushing your progression can do more harm than good. Your body, especially your muscles, joints, and connective tissues, need time to adapt to the demands of pole. Skipping steps or pushing too fast can lead to plateaus, burnout, or even injury.

At Studio K, we believe in celebrating every stage of your journey. Mastering the fundamentals lays the groundwork for advanced skills later on. So when you see slower progress? That’s actually your body building lasting strength and resilience. Even when you’re not nailing skills, you’re still growing. Every rep, every class, every moment on the pole counts. Trust your body, trust your instructors, and trust the process.
